Podcasts: Focus on Businss Robert Pleming, Chief Executive, Vulcan to the Sky Trust.
Adrian Moss spoke to Robert about the Trust and its mission to save the last remaining Vulcan (XH558) from the scrap heap and keep her flying. Robert talks about this iconic aircraft and how important it is to keep it flying as a visible example of the world leadership the UK had in aviation engineering in the 1950s and the last aircraft flying from the Air Defence Shield that kept watch during the Cold War during the 1950s to 1980s . It also symbolises how innovative and fast moving aero-engineering was at that time with the Vulcans first test flight being in 1952 – just 11 years after the WW2 Lancaster bomber’s first test flight. A massive technological leap in just a few years. With financial help from the Heritage Lottery Fund and members of the public XH558 was rebuild and achieved her Permit to Fly and flew again in 2007. Support from the original manufacturers (plus 800 tons of spares sold to the Trust by the RAF) means she has all the necessary parts to keep flying. She just needs the public’s continued support to help meet her annual running costs. www.vulcantothesky.org Follow her on Facebook and on Twitter to keep up to date on the latest news and flying display schedules. 2012 is an important date as it is the Diamond Jubilee for the Vulcan as well as the Queen and I forgot to ask Martin if she was doing a Fly Past at the Olympics!
